HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Central Virginia could soon get its first taste of a grocery store with a rabid following in the Northeast.

Wegmans Food Markets confirmed plans Wednesday to open two stores, one in Chesterfield and another in Henrico.

"Over the years, we have had countless requests to open a Wegmans store in the Richmond area, so we are delighted to finally announce that we're headed there," says Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans senior vice president of real estate.

The Chesterfield store is proposed as the new anchor of the Stonehenge Village Shopping Center in Midlothian, about a mile west of Chesterfield Town Center on Midlothian Turnpike. Stonehenge Village will eventually have around 230,000 square feet of retail, including a grocery store, restaurants and other shops.

"We have long-viewed Wegmans as the ideal anchor for Stonehenge Village", said Bobby Marchetti, one of the principals of Marchetti Properties. "Wegmans epitomizes the highest of quality in everything the company does—from the architecture of their stores to the way they treat their customers and their employees—and we could not be more pleased that Wegmans chose to develop at Stonehenge Village."

The Henrico store is proposed at West Broad Marketplace in Short Pump, about a half mile west of the Short Pump Mall. The store would also be an anchor property, along with a proposed Cabela's.

The nearest Wegmans stores is in Fredericksburg. Another is proposed in Charlottesville. The Richmond-area stores will be similar in size and design to Wegmans' current Virginia stores, which range in size from 120,000 to 140,000 sq. ft.

Each of the Richmond-area stores will create 550 to 600 full- and part-time jobs. Wegmans has been on FORTUNE magazine's list of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For' for seventeen consecutive years, ranking #12 in 2014.

Right now, the company doesn't have a date for construction or opening, as the projects still require approvals.

Wegmans is an 83-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
