Henrico tweens rush into burning building, save lives

Two Henrico kids spring into action when a neighboring apartment building catches fire. On Tuesday night, the Fairfield Middle School students were honored by the Henrico Fire Department.

13-year-old Tre Crusan and best friend 12-year-old Yamira Sinkler were passing by an apartment building in 11 North at White Oak Apartments last Monday, when they saw smoke.

The pair immediately ran inside and began pounding on residents' doors warning them there was a fire.

"We were scared and nervous," said Yamira Sinkler. "We didn't know if the apartment was going to blow up or anything."

That didn't stop Yamira and Tre from knocking on every door before calling 911.

"I just didn't want to see other people's kids get hurt," said Tre.

The apartment building that was on fire couldn't be seen from the main road. The Henrico Fire Department says, because of these fast-acting children, everybody was able to make it out alive.

"That fire could have very easily burned down that building," said Captain Danny Rosenbaum with the Henrico Fire Department. "So they prevented a lot of damage and potentially saved some lives."

Tuesday night, the Henrico Fire Department named Yamira and Tre honorary firefighters and presented them with certificates of commendation.

For Yamira, this is just the beginning as a future firefighter while Tre says, he just hopes other kids follow in their footsteps.

"Whenever you see something wrong just take action. Whether it's a fire or bullying."
