Deadly crash sparks call for safety in New Kent

Kentland Trail and Route 155 in New Kent is considered the most dangerous intersection in the county. According to the sheriff's department, there have been 68 accidents there since 2005.
Two weeks ago, one of them was fatal. Three people were killed when a car collided with a dump truck.
"In the past, it's been a major concern, but now it's been elevated to a crisis," said Ron Stier, a county board member and member of the transportation safety commission.
That's why he and the county board of supervisors requested a traffic survey about a year ago.
The hope was to have a red light placed here, but the result of the survey found that it was not needed.
Currently there are only stop signs in the area.
Following the April 11 accident, the county's transportation safety commission requested the VDOT steps to conduct a new traffic survey.
"if VDOT says the volume of traffic doesn't warrant a red light, I know the sheriff's department is requesting at least the speed limit be dropped from 50 to 35 and maybe some flashing lights be installed, or maybe some rumble strips, whatever it can do to try and make drivers more aware of what's going on," said Stier.
