A family went to visit a cemetery in Waverly on Easter Sunday only to find their mother's coffin unearthed.

Police say it appears vandals were trying to gain entry to the casket. The family says the crooks targeted a loving grandmother who's husband founded a Virginia church.

"I just felt like she was completely violated," said Ida Mae Perry's daughter-in-law, Satonya Perry. "I was just in shock."

Ida Mae Perry's children will never forget the disturbing scene.

"Actually my blood pressure went up," said Mrs. Perry's daughter, Sylvia Harrison.

They all raced to the Waverly Cemetery. Police say cemetery workers discovered the grave had been dup up. The cement vault was demolished.

"I still can't get my hands on it," said Mrs. Perry's son, Glenn Perry. "My brain wrapped around it."

The family wants to find the people responsible.

"And those who did this," said Satonya. "The law finding them is going to be the least of their worries."

The Perry family founded The Greater Shiloh Miracle Center Church in Waverly.

"I just could not understand who would go as far as violating the grave of a pastor and a mother of a church," said Harrison

Police say they will be increasing patrols around the cemetery following the bizarre crime.

"It's unusual for a small town. I haven't seen that before down here," said Officer John Schmidt. "We've notified other fellow officers as well as the county to assist with additional patrols within the cemetery."

Police opened the casket to determine no items were stolen. They say felony charges are likely The family is offering a $500 reward for more information. If you know anything about this crime call State Police at 757-424-6800.
