Petersburg Fire Marshal recuses himself from fatal fire investigation

Posted: Updated:
PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

A Petersburg Assistant Fire Marshal is recusing himself from a quadruple death investigation, because the victims were his family members.

Marlow Jones explained his reason for stepping back from the investigation Monday. Sixty-nine-year-old Pauline Wilkins died early Saturday morning when her home went up in flames. Her daughter, Vicki Answar, her granddaughter, Tanique Chavis, and her great-grandson, Deldari Chavis, also died.

Jones says, the first call he got early Saturday morning was for a fire. Moments, later his phone rang again.

"That's when I found out it was my aunt and three cousins inside the home," he said. "I beat myself every night. Should I fight to be a part of the investigation or shouldn't I?"

Meanwhile, a state-wide manhunt is underway for Alexander Hill. Petersburg police say he is a person of interest in this case.

Hill is considered armed and dangerous and police say he has ties to Richmond, Tidewater, and Trinidad.
