HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A Henrico homeowner was prepared to defend herself when a man claiming to be selling security systems showed up on her Hermitage Road porch after dark.

Catherine Card said the door-to-door salesman claimed to represent a security company based in Utah.

"I was very skeptical about it," said Card. "I was scared. I had this shovel ready. I was ready to hit him in the thorax."

Card says she immediately called police when the man introduced himself. "Door to door? When it's dark?" wondered Card, who has "No Trespassing" signs clearly posted on her property. "That is not supposed to happen. That, to me, should be illegal."

"It's annoying," said NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin. "It's bothersome. Sometimes its even scary."

Benjamin said soliciting after dark isn't illegal after all, but he stressed this is why "No Trespassing" signs are important.

"Post it so that it is clearly visible after dark and clearly conveys the message that this homeowner does not want to be disturbed," said Benjamin.

Concerned residents can always call the police, too.

"We want them to call us," said Assistant Chief Jim Fitzgerald. "Let the officer come out there. Let's make sure that they have the proper credentials."

Card is prepared to take matters in her own hands.

"I can't stand anybody in my yard that I did not invite," she said. Card filed a police report, and she said she plans to pursue criminal trespass charges against the man who came on her property.
