3 homes destroyed, woman injured in possible tornado in Lovelady

LOVELADY, TX (KTRE) -

A possible tornado has destroyed three mobile homes and injured a woman in a possible tornado in Lovelady Sunday afternoon.

Houston County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy GP Shearer said eight structures were damaged, including minor damage to the Lovelady High School. Shearer said a woman received lacerations to her face and arm when a tree went into her mobile home. The woman was taken by private vehicle to a Crockett hospital, where she is expected to be treated and released.

for Lovelady a freight train is usually all that rumbles through on a Sunday evening, except when a tornado comes through town.

"I just felt a whole bunch of wind. As soon as a I looked out the window, it happened all at once. I didn't have time to react," said Gaby Morales. Her home was destroyed by the tornado confirmed by Houston County Chief Deputy GP Shearer.

Morales' grandmothers home right next door was knocked off its supports and dropped several feet away.

Two doors down Tonia Cowger was trapped in her kitchen when a tree fell on her home.

Her daughter, Beverly Cowger Moore said, "She was just a little shaken up, but she was fine. The EMT tried to get her on the gurney and she said, 'No, I can walk.' She walked on a cut on her leg, but she's doing good."

Much to the relief of another daughter, Stacy McDonald.

"We always had a tremendous fear of tornadoes. We talk about it, see it on TV all the time, but never do you think about it. Hits home, you know. And you see the damage. It's pretty rough."

Other mobile homes in the area received extensive damage, including a day care. It's roof was blown down the road.

Once the funnel cloud moved on Lovelady residents began, "checking on their neighbors," said Shearer. Emergency rescue crews stepped up patrol tonight around the damaged homes.

"We're currently in contact with the Red Cross, American Red Cross. They're sending a team of appraisers down here to this area and we've made arrangements for those people to get in contact with them, to make arrangements for housing, food, clothing, whatever they need," shared Shearer.

In the meantime, the victims are saying they're lucky to be alive.
