Richmond preparing for City’s biggest event, ever


In three weeks, close to ten miles of Richmond's busiest streets will shut down, in what organizers and police officials are calling the City's largest event, ever.

Hundreds of college cyclists will take to the streets from Monument Avenue to Shockoe Bottom May 2 – 4, all part of USA Cycling's Collegiate Road National Championships.

The upcoming race will prepare the City for next year, when Richmond hosts the even larger cycling event, the 2015 UCI Road World Championships.

In a news conference Thursday, Richmond Police and cycling organizers announced the multitude of streets that will close, with three races taking place over three days.

"The Collegiate race will be the largest event the City and Richmond Police will have ever managed," said Cpt. Will Smith in an interview Thursday. "We are prepared."

Work to prepare the cycling race courses begins Thursday, May 1. The start and finish for all three races will be at the Richmond Convention Center. A breakdown of the road closures is provided below:

Thursday, May 1

Street closures: Broad Street between 3rd and 7th Streets.

5th Street between Marshall and Grace

3rd Street between Clay and Broad

Closures begin at 7:00 p.m.

Friday, May 2 – Time Trials

Monument Avenue, Broad Street, Main Street, Belvidere and Lee Bridge closed Downtown

Closures begin 3:00 a.m. lasting through 4:30 p.m.

Closures begin 4:00 a.m. lasting through 10:00 p.m.
