Police warn of dangerous Chesterfield intersection

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield Police are issuing a traffic warning, after a number of near collisions at the intersection of Rt. 10 and Beach Road.

The traffic pattern has changed in the last year, but police say some people aren't heeding those changes. Iron Bridge Road now has two left turn lanes, one of which permits a U-turn to get to businesses on the other side of the street. But police say people making a right off Beach Road onto Iron Bridge Road, aren't yielding the right of way.

The intersection is busy and popular, because it's right near the Chesterfield County government complex. Mornings and evenings can be high traffic times.

"If you stood here and watched, you'd see near collision after near collision," said Cpt. David Shand. "We've done enforcement efforts and the behavior's just not changing."

Even police, located across the street, are finding themselves near victims.

"The officers, if they come out of this parking lot, they have to make the U-turn to go back toward Chester," said Shand. "So, I mean none of us are immune, even the marked police cars."

Police say they are putting out the warning now, before one of those near misses, ends up much worse.

Failing to yield the right of way is illegal. The police department is right across the street and if they catch you doing this, even if there's not an accident, you could end up paying out of pocket for a traffic violation.
