Walnut Hill Elementary closes due to Petersburg water main break

Free water is expected to be handed out to residents experiencing low water pressure beginning at 8:30am on Tuesday morning.

The water is expected to be handed out at the Food Lion Location on South Crater Road.

The City of Petersburg is now urging residents and businesses experiencing low water pressure or no water, to continue boiling all drinking water for 24 hours after full pressure is restored.

The areas of the city affected extend from Tuckahoe Avenue and South Sycamore Street, east to the Prince George County border. This includes the 460/County Drive corridor area.

Walnut Hill Elementary School will be closed Tuesday April 8, due to complications from the water main break in Petersburg.

According to Petersburg school spokesperson, Nicole Bell-Van Patten, all Walnut Hill Elementary students are off, but employees and staff are to report on time Tuesday.

By 11:30 p.m. Monday, repairs crews were continuing their work on a 40-foot long water main that had burst on South Crater Road at Morton Avenue. Officials said that temporary repairs should be in place by 1:00 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the Petersburg Department of Public Works and Utilities, crews were repairing a crack in a water line Sunday night. When they went to turn the water off, things just got worse.

There are also two lanes closed on South Crater Road as of Tuesday morning. Look for alternates from Tracy Lynn on NBC12.
