CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield man is behind bars accused of stealing lottery tickets.

Chesterfield Police say 22-year-old Johnathan Manuel stole the and later tried to cash them at a store in the 3000 block of South Street.

"I think good is good, and bad is bad," said lottery player Michael Hawley. "I want to stay on the good side, because that's the lucky side."

Police say the suspect stole 10 to 15 scratch-off tickets. He was charged with grand larceny of lottery tickets and six counts of cashing stolen lottery tickets.

"Stealing lottery tickets is a serious crime that carries serious penalties," said John Hagerty with the Virginia Lottery. "The lottery investigates and works with local law enforcement to prosecute."

Hagerty says the ticket is deactivated as soon as it is reported stolen.

"And not only that," said Hagerty. "If someone does try to cash it...it sets off red flags."
