Authorities investigate recent vandalism in Colonial Heights

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) -

Just after midnight Monday, fire crews raced to Flora Hill Park to find a trash can on fire, just blocks away from two buildings that were hit by vandals.

That was one of three small fires that broke out within 20 minutes of each other overnight, two of which now have investigators looking for a possible connection with recent vandalism.

"It just makes things kind of unpleasant, when you have such a nice neighborhood, then things like this kind of happen," Justin Keppler said.

JWK Electronics owner Justin Keppler found signs and symbols spray painted on the side of his business early Saturday morning. In the two years he's been here on Norfolk Avenue, he says the building has been a constant target for vandals.

"We had several businesses get hit a few months back not quite as big more smaller stuff and they caught those people a few months ago," Keppler said.

Police say it's one of several businesses in the area spray painted over the weekend.

"You just don't know what is going to happen next, is it going to be a break in? Is someone going to smash windows in? Affect the inside? You don't know what is going to happen," said office manager Staci Hartman.

Besides the Flora Hill Park fire last night, a traffic cone was also set on fire on Royal Oak. Now it's up to investigators to see if the fire and the graffiti are connected.

"You pull up to a professional building and you don't expect to see that so it is very frustrating cost factor, I mean you are going to have to pay to have the building painted and hope they don't come back and have to do it again."
