Colonial Heights brothers save elderly man from burning home

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) -

Two Colonial Heights men are being called heroes. A father and his two sons jumped into action when their elderly neighbor's Fairfax Avenue home caught fire.

"He was burned up," said Joshua Snyder. "His whole left side was burn up. He was burned from his head all the way down to the back of his left leg. His shirt was melted to him. It was bad."

Joshua and his brother Trevor rushed into a burning home to save their elderly neighbor. It was a dangerous move.

"But I'm not going to sit there and let somebody die in front of me," said Joshua.

Joshua's father, Fred Snyder, watched in disbelief.

"It scared me," said Snyder. "Scared the death out of me."

Fire crews from Colonial Heights, Chesterfield, and a Fort Lee medic unit responded to the blaze. Deputy fire marshal Joe Boisseau admits the neighbors played a pivotal role in the incident.

"They did a good thing," said Boisseau who has a warning for the community. "Only risk your life if it is to save a neighbor and you can do so safely. Know what your limitations are."

Trevor Snyder actually grabbed his extinguisher and tried to put out the flames, but he doesn't consider himself a hero.

"Oh no," said Trevor. "Just trying to do the right thing. Help somebody out."

Dad is proud of his boys.

"I guess if we weren't here at the time," said Fred. "He might not have been able to get out."

Fire officials say the victim is listed in stable condition.
