Chesterfield gas station robbery victim speaks out after attack

Earle Spencer could have died when he was attacked outside his gas station on Centralia Road in Chesterfield on New Year's Day. The 73-year-old was opening his store when someone beat him, hitting him on the head several times.

"He just sneak up behind me and hit me," said Spencer. "I saw him coming, but it was too late. It was too quick. I'm not going to have time to think about it."

Regaining consciousness, bleeding and on his knees, Spencer was able to call police for help.

"I remember calling the police and the moment some guy asked me, said do you want to go to the hospital?" said Spencer. "I said, no, I don't want to go, but I guess I gotta go. We went to MCV and they kept me overnight."

Pictures taken just after the attack show Spencer's eyes swollen shut, his face bloody and bruised. He needed staples in his head and stitches in his ear.

"It was bad. You couldn't even recognize me," said Spencer.

Spencer's vision has been blurry in one eye for a while and he still needs help driving, but he says whoever did this couldn't hold him back. Spencer is back to work already, anxious for police to catch whoever did this. He thinks someone knows something that could help.

"I know they do," said Spencer. "I'm positive. Positive 100 percent."

Spencer's family has put together a reward fund to help catch the robber, about $5,000.

"Now that we have the additional reward, we're hoping that will be even more of an incentive and want to come forward and give us information," said Cpl. Kevin Bacon.

Spencer is optimistic whoever took his money will be caught, because of the reward.

"I think they're going to catch them," said Spencer. "It's just a matter of time."
