Woodlake ’drop-in’ hourly child care gives parents options

If you're a parent on the go, a Midlothian mother has an innovative way to get you child care on short notice. It's called "drop-in" child care.

Parents who need someone to watch their kids can drop them off for just a few hours.

Kids like 2-year-old Ryan Helpinstill roam the imaginary highways at Kidz Space Child Care in the Woodlake Commons Shopping Center. Ryan's dad brings him to the new drop-in hourly child care center when he has errands or for play time with other children.

"There is some dead time in the morning when I take both my kids to school, and it's just me and him and maybe a neighbor and he gets kind of bored and tired of daddy," said Clay Helpinstill. "So, it's good to kind of find some other kids his age to play with."

Kidz Space offers hourly care for children ages two to 12 and a variety of games and activities to keep them busy while mom and day are away.

When parents bring their children to Kidz Space, they have to fill out three different forms and leave a picture ID.

"Our goal and our overall mission is to provide a secure and safe environment for children and for parents to be able to trust us with that," said Thai Hoa Burroughs.

The center is the brainchild of Burroughs and her husband. They used hourly care when they lived in North Carolina.

"My husband and I moved to Virginia, we did not have any family or friends in the area for us to go house hunting, run errands," said Burroughs. "We hadn't had a dinner by ourselves in a while or go to the movies."

Burroughs says all of her employees are CPR and state certified. They even offer date nights for parents and provide dinner and snacks for children. For Ryan Helpinstill, Kidz Space is his new place of refuge when he and daddy both need a break for just a few hours.

"It looks like a nice safe place it looks like a safe place my son was certainly eager to come in so that always makes me feel good," said Clay Helpinstill.

In the future there may be plans to expand and add other Kidz Space locations across the Richmond area.  Drop-in rates at Kidz Space are $9.25 an hour for the first child and $6.00 an hour for each additional sibling.
