Update: Possible hazardous gas leak in Carroll Co.

Update: 
Investigators from the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry have been at Virginia Produce in Hillsville for most of the afternoon into late this evening, trying to figure out what sent more than fifty people to the hospital today. They were complaining of headaches, dizziness, nausea and difficulty breathing. Tests run on the air quality in the plant have come back clean. Mechanical systems inside the plant are now back up and operational. No apparent cause was found. Carroll County Sheriff officials say there are no fatalities.Personnel will continue to monitor air quality throughout the night and investigators will be back on scene in the morning.

4:46 update: Officials with the Carroll Co. Sheriff's Office say more than 50 people were transported to hospitals in the area, and as far away as Duke Medical Center.  Local hospitals taking patients include Wythe Co. Community Hospital, Twin County Regional Hospital, and Northern Hospital of Surry County. 

3:30 update: Duke Carter has arrived in Carroll County. The Sheriff's office says they don't know yet what sort of gas leak is involved, but some 50 people were outside the plant when they arrived. Some people had fainted or passed out. Some victims were taken to Twin Co. hospital, with others being transported to Wytheville. Four people were flown out by helicopter. Police are bringing in someone to test the air to determine what sort of gas the people have been exposed to. They don't know at this time if the leak is carbon monoxide.


2:50 update: Lifeguard 11 has been called in from the NRV to help transport victims.

Dispatchers in Carroll county say a problem involving carbon monoxide may be going on at Virginia Produce Company in Hillsville. We have a crew headed to the scene in Hillsville. We'll provide more details as they become available.

Twin County Regional Hospital says people are being transported to multiple hospitals, including theirs. Some victims are being airlifted.

Hillsville Police said the case was being handled by the county. Carroll Co. Sheriff’s office had no information to share when we called.
