RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority announced Monday it will stop operating a police department Tuesday.
The agency made the announcement official Monday afternoon, though it remains unclear who will now be charged with policing RRHA properties and whether the Richmond Police Department will take over any of those duties.
"After conducting a review of its operations, the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) has concluded that its residents are better served by deploying its resources in a manner more consistent with its core mission of providing housing services rather than providing ancillary security services," the agency said in a press release.
The agency says it has advised local government officials of the change and have taken steps to protect residents.
The department is made up of seven officers and sources say those officers are now being called into an emergency meeting at the RRHA police headquarters at 2:30 p.m. The officers were not told the reason for the meeting, according to a source.
