RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

He's known as "the prince of Gospel." John P. Kee's decades-old career as a song writer and songbird is just as relevant today as he's still able to pack venues. That proved evident Saturday as a few hundred people crowded Fresh Anointing Cathedral in north Richmond to hear the award-winning gospel superstar perform some of his greatest hits. Kee used that opportunity to inspire crowd-goers to put their faith into action when it comes to dealing with life's obstacles.

"My miracle is coming to my address," Kee told the crowd in between songs.

The spirited event found those in attendance clapping their hands and singing along as Kee and a seven-person ensemble performed familiar tunes like "Lilly in the Valley" and "Oh Happy Day."

Kee is known for his big choir sound since he recorded with the "New Life Community Choir" of North Carolina for years. Saturday, the ensemble filled the cathedral just as melodiously as any choir could have.

"I love the music. I live next door and I had to buy a ticket. I've seen him before and he's very good," said Marcia Harris who could be seen smiling and enjoying the mix of uptempo and ballads.

Kee told the crowd that while today's modern gospel music is filling a critical need, he still wants music lovers to embrace gospel music of the past.

"Don't ever forget where you come from…Back in the day, our songs had meaning," Kee said while sitting next to a keyboard.

Kee says gospel music is a tool that not only encourages the masses, but one that can also steer young people away from a life of violence. At one point, he led the crowd in a "march" around the church for attendees to celebrate triumphs and wave away their problems.

Harris is delighted she had the opportunity to attend. Even though she attends a different church, she knew she had to be at Fresh Anointing Saturday evening.

"I think it's wonderful they brought him, especially in our neighborhood. It's something good for the neighborhood," she said.
