RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Customers who use Walmart MoneyCards are complaining about the reloadable prepaid cards being compromised, Consumer Affairs reports.
Many viewers contacted NBC12 after becoming a victim. It's now clear how, but crooks are somehow stealing the card information and wiping the cards clean.
The Walmart Money Card can be used just like a credit card. Many consumers find it convenient, because there is no credit check and no bank account is required. However, there is a downside. It's been reported that in some cases, crooks can somehow get their hands on the card information.
Walmart is aware of the problem. A spokesperson for the company that issues the cards says security is a number one priority. The good news is that, if this happens to you, your money will be refunded. If you're a victim, the first thing you should do is call the customer service number on the back of the card for help.
Walmart also has a section on its site to report your card lost, stolen or to dispute a charge. Another helpful tip is to set up balance alerts. It will allow you keep track of your card's activity.
Company representatives say don't get the Walmart Money Card confused with the Money Pak Card. Both are owned by Green Dot, but the Money Pak card is just like cash not a credit card. If crooks get their hands on your Money Pak number, there is no refund. On its website, the company provides some safety tips to protect your card and your cash. Remember, you are your best advocate and criminals are betting you're not paying attention.
