Harrowgate firehouse finally under construction after 10-year wait

The Harrowgate Road fire house project has been in the works for about a decade, since a bond referendum in 2004. Now, construction on the fire station is finally underway.

Once it's operational, firefighters say the house will be busy.

"When the station opens, we anticipate it will answer somewhere in the neighborhood of 1400 to 1500 fire and EMS calls," said Chief Loy Senter, with the Chesterfield Fire Department.

Just recently, there were two major fires in the area the Harrowgate station will cover. A multi-alarm fire at a VDOT building and a fire in Amherst Ridge that destroyed one home and damaged three more. The new firehouse would have cut the response time on the Amherst Ridge fire from 10 minutes, to just one.

Firefighters say response times should drop for neighboring stations, too. Right now, the stations nearby are also covering the area near the Harrowgate Road station.

"They're further away, and two of the stations that service this district are also some of our busiest stations," explained Senter. "Often, they may be on a call when a call occurs in that district."

By keeping them closer to home base, their response times should also improve. Firefighters say it's not just about better service, it's about being good neighbors, too.

"The fire station becomes a part of the community," said Senter. "It really does and we're looking forward to becoming more engaged with that area of the county."

If all goes according to plan, the fire house will open officially in January of 2015.
