Police searching for Stony Point ice cream shop robber

Police are on the lookout for a bold suspect who robbed an ice cream shop at the Old Stony Point Shopping Center in broad daylight.

The thief struck Wednesday evening at the shopping center off Huguenot Road. Several customers were inside the Gelati Celesti shop at the time.

Those who shop in the area say they are simply stunned the crook would be so bold.

"There were about seven cop cars there," said a concerned customer who loves visiting the shop. "It's very nice, very clean and a nice family place to go."

When five customers showed up Wednesday, they had no idea a robber was walking in too.

"The manager thought it was a joke. The person reached across the counter, pushed the cash register button to open the drawer. The manager, not realizing the seriousness, pushed the drawer closed," said owner Steve Rosser.

That's when the robber grabbed the register and took off with cash.

The owner says even though the robber is on the run, he may have the one tool that could help find the suspect: surveillance video. It's now in the hands of Richmond police. Officers say they're following leads.

The Martin's grocery store in the same plaza was robbed twice within a matter of months late last year. Officers made an arrest, and customers are hopeful they'll be able to do the same in this case.

"The ice cream shop has all glass in front. It's not like it was behind anything. Anybody walking by could see it, but they did it anyway," one customer said.

"It's just ridiculous…in this day and age, what can you say?" said Norma Knapp.

The ice cream shop opened back up Wednesday night following the crime. Rosser says in the two years he's been there, he's never had any problems.
