Hopewell man steals car; crashes into police cars during chase

A Hopewell man is under arrest after a police chase in Chesterfield just after midnight Thursday.

Officers say 47-year-old William Hardee was intoxicated when he rammed into two cop cars with a stolen car and tried to run.

Officers got a tip Hardee may have been breaking into cars in the 800 block of Boulder Springs drive.

"It's pathetic that you come into an area like this," said Vaughan Buchanan who lives in the area.

Police say when they showed up, William Hardee took off on Chippenham Parkway, ramming into two police cars before stopping on Oxbridge Road.

"Driving through the neighborhood, looked like it was a small NASCAR event," said a neighbor on Oxbridge.

A mailbox is destroyed, tire tracks circle a front yard and tire pieces litter the street.

"The tracks go all the way down to the creek so somebody had to go down there," the neighbor said.

Police say when the suspect came to the dead end of Oxbridge Road, he drove behind a home where officers followed.

"There were three police cruisers to this point," the witness explained.

A concrete pipe cover was destroyed in the process. That's when the suspect got out his car and tried to run, but police caught him and took him into custody.

"I guess his luck was bad," Buchanan said.

Officers say Hardee even told them he was someone else when they questioned him. He was treated and released from a hospital for minor injuries. No officers were injured.
