VOTE NOW: Magazine wants to know if Richmond is a top destination

When it comes to top getaways, a national magazine wants to know if Richmond is among the best of the best. Travel + Leisure is leaving the answer in your hands when you log on to an online survey. Only a select number of cities made the list of options.

History, charm, and scenery are a few of the things that attract so many to Richmond every year and now with a little extra exposure, tourism officials say it only gets better from here.

You don't have to look far to get a glimpse of what makes Richmond so riveting.

"I really like the city. It's beautiful. We've been looking at all the monuments up there," said visitor Shelby Powers.

The Powers family is visiting from Arkansas, getting a good look at The River City.

"We want to see the James River and that area before we leave and then we want to go to I think they called it Monument Mile," said Mary Powers referring to Monument Avenue.

Now the nation's eyes are also fixed on RVA.

Travel + Leisure magazine is looking for the best of the best getaway destinations. It's asking travelers to choose their favorite. Richmond and Williamsburg are the only Virginia cities on the list of options.

"We are a hip place to be," said Jack Berry of Richmond Region Tourism.

The news follows a record breaking number of visitors in 2013.

"Once they come, 44% of those who visit will return within one year because they realize ‘you have great restaurants, great attractions, hey I'm coming back'," he said.

The Travel + Leisure listing comes on top of even more exposure. Frommer's worldwide travel guide named Richmond a 2014 top destination.

"Now the nation is finding out what we knew, that we're the best destination to visit," Berry added.

So his group is using the publicity, social media, and publications to spread the word. It placed a Richmond ad in USA Today last month. This Spring, Richmond will be featured again in Southern Living Magazine.

"Orlando, Disney and Las Vegas, they understand that. The Richmond region is realizing now sports tourism, and tourists and 95 traffic, they come they spend and then they leave and then they leave all that money with us," he added.

A few national conventions are headed to Richmond this year, bringing even more eyes to the area.
