Shaka Watch 2014: VCU says Smart remains head coach

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

As far as VCU is concerned, Shaka Smart is still the head basketball coach.

Zanya Henry is part of the Rowdy Rams student athletic support group. Win or lose, she's there cheering on her team.

"I go to as many games as I can. It sucks that we didn't make championship, but there is always next year," Henry said.

Zanya doesn't want to see Coach Smart go. For now, it looks as if next year's season will include Shaka Smart as head coach, despite reports that Smart would take on a position at Marquette University as men's basketball coach.

VCU'S athletic department said that currently, Shaka Smart is still the men's basketball coach and nothing has changed.

Zayna Henry says if there are changes to VCU's basketball program, she and other students still support the coach who led the Rams to the Final Four in 2011.

"If he does go and move to a different school, we will always support him and back him... but we hope he does stay," Zayna Henry said.

While Coach Smart is still on VCU's staff, one coach is leaving -  Asst. Mike Rhoades has accepted the head coaching job at Rice University in Houston.
