Friends remember Hanover teen killed in car accident

The Hanover Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly crash that killed a Mechanisville teenager.

Deputies tell us at approximately 7:45 a.m. Friday they responded to the 4300 block of Piping Tree Ferry Road for a report of a single-vehicle crash.

They say a 1995 Honda Accord was traveling west on Piping Tree Ferry Road near Old Church Road when it ran off the right side of the roadway, striking several trees and a wooden fence.

19 year-old Joelle Howard, the driver and only occupant in the vehicle, was transported to VCU Medical Center by Virginia State Police Med-Flight. Howard was later pronounced dead. A driver passing by found her car.

Sherry Allen fought back tears reflecting on the life of her cheerful coworker Joelle Howard.

"Very good person, full of energy, good worker just a wonderful person," Howard said.

She last worked on Thursday. On Friday her 1995 Honda Accord ran off this road.

Flowers are now at the crash-site, the skid marks are still on the road. coworkers say they want to reflect on good times and memories that they shared with the young woman whose life was cut short.

"She will never be a mother, she will never be a grandmother but she was happy."

Joelle worked at the store for about 6 months. Coworkers say she recently got her car out of the shop and was eager to be on the road again.

Though Joelle is gone, a legacy will live on through the many memories shared with those who knew her best.

"Today I think of her as a butterfly, she fluttered from one thing to another, typical teenager and then suddenly the butterfly has bigger wings now and she is an angel for us."
