Neighborhood Health Watch: Colorectal cancer

It is responsible for more deaths related to cancer than any other form. It is also the most common form of cancer but the good news is that colorectal cancer is also very treatable if it is found early.

That means when you reach a certain age you need to be screened.

The early stages of this type of cancer rarely display symptoms. That is why you need to go and look for it.

When found early- it is usually easily dispatched. That means screenings every ten years starting at the age of 50. Unless you have a family history.

Dr. Michael Jones from Henrico Doctors Hospital explains the good news. The screening process has become very manageable.

"Certainly the perpetration has gotten better over time and the sedation has gotten better so the procedure itself has become very comfortable so most patients do not have a lot of reconcile of having it done."

The best place to learn more about the screening process is with your primary care physician.
