CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Relatives of a good Samaritan who lost his legs after a crash say he is in good spirits following surgery.

Brad Hughes, who works for a security company, pulled over to assist a police officer helping a disabled motorist on Monday evening. Another vehicle ran off the road in the icy conditions, crashed into the back of Hughes' SUV. Hughes was pinned between his vehicle and the disabled motorist's car.

Hughes was taken to the hospital and had to have his legs amputated. No one else was hurt.

No charges have been filed against the driver.

His family and friends say Hughes is in good spirits after surgery Thursday to clean and close up his wounds, but struggling with medical bills. They've created an online fundraising campaign to help him financially. So far, more than $2,000 has been donated, however the goal is $10,000.
