VINTON -

Vinton Town Council will consider lowering its cigarette tax.

Last year, council raised the tax on cigarettes from 20 to 35 cents.

The move was expected to bring in an additional $159,000 to the town in the first year.

But through eight months, revenues fell well short and now are expected to only bring in an additional $29,000.

Mayor Brad Grose said this is a good time for the town to re-evaluate.

"We pride ourselves that we work to be certainly responsible, but we also want to be responsive to our merchants and to our citizens," he said. "I think that we are being responsive to a situation that needed to be corrected."

The proposal would lower the tax to 25 cents on packs containing less than 25 cigarettes.

Tonight's meeting is at 7 p.m. in Vinton Town Council Chambers.
