Rams, Spiders cheer on team of choice at watch parties

Posted: Updated:

As the battle in Brooklyn heated up Friday evening, fans flocked to watch parties all over our area to cheer on their team of choice. Baja Bean Company in The Fan hosted one of those watch parties, where a host of VCU fans gathered to catch their victory.

Just before tip off, Rowdy Rams began pouring in to Baja Bean where energy met excitement.

"It's totally changed in just a few years. VCU wasn't a big deal but since the Final Four, it's really taken off," said Rusty Tutton.

Baja opened up extra rooms to accommodate the growing number of VCU fans.

"Everybody in the city is just crazy about this team," Tutton said.

"I love Shaka Smart. I love havoc. I love Reddick," said Patrice Bird.

On the other side of town, crowds were cheering for the spiders. At Toast restaurant in Henrico, University of Richmond fans came with high hopes.

"I'm really excited. I'm a Richmond native so the whole VCU rivalry is really intense and I just want us to win," Kate Lafayette said.

"It's a deep rivalry because they don't really consider us the university of Richmond. They call us the university of Henrico," Shayna Webb added.

As the night progressed, the odds landed in the rams favor, causing quite the celebration.

"VCU is going to take it all the way. We're going to go to Raleigh next week, get a 3 seed and bring 8000 fans to the RBC center in Raleigh, North Carolina," Tutton said.

Now spiders fans are sending a loud message following the disappointing battle in Brooklyn.

"We still love you and we still support you. Better luck next season," Lafayette said.

At Baja, managers handed out raffle tickets for gift cards and rams t-shirts as a way to say thank you to fans who came out to celebrate.
