NBC12 VIEWPOINT: Communities in Schools (CIS): Connecting Students to Success

By: Kym Grinnage email

Do you remember the feeling you had when you graduated from High School?! I do! I remember that feeling and I was on cloud nine.

Did you know that at the end of every school day, 7,000 more students drop out of school? Almost one third of students fail to graduate high school with their class and among ethnic minorities the rate is almost 50%.

Dropouts earn $9,200 less per year than high school graduates and $1 million less over a lifetime than college students.

The national initiative, Communities In Schools or CIS, is having success right here in Richmond in turning these numbers around. How do they spell SUCCESS? In 2012, 77% of the CIS students improved their academic performance, 77% improved behavior, 75% improved attendance and most importantly 92% of eligible seniors graduated. CIS works!

Please join me in helping Communities In Schools have more success stories. If you would like to volunteer, learn more or give from the heart, you can contact them at 804.358.1247and ask for Suzy Keeley. Online you can go to: cisofrichmond.org.

Programs attempt to solve a problem. People and the relationships they form save lives. I hope we can count on you to help save a life.
