Police question W. Va. suspect in series of Alexandria murders

ALEXANDRIA, VA (WWBT) -

Police are now investigating whether an arrest in West Virginia could provide a break in the investigation into a series of murders in Alexandria.

Charles S. Severance, 53, was arrested Thursday at a library in Wheeling, W. Va. on a weapons charge, according to WTOV9.com. He is being held at the Northern Regional Jail on $100,000 bond and reportedly does not want to be extradited back to Virginia.

Investigators are now checking to see if Severance is tied to three high-profile murders over the past 10 years, several sources tell NBCWashington.com.

NBC Washington reports Severance was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon in Loudoun County and was arrested by county sheriffs and federal agents Thursday.

Police said the three murders were possibly linked last week, based on the bullets used. Ruthanne Lodato was murdered in February, Ron Kirby in November and Nancy Dunning in 2003. All three were shot in their own homes, during the day and the suspect did not force his way inside.
