Route 460 project suspended, awaiting permit approval

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Contract work on the Route 460 project, a limited-access highway that would run from Petersburg to Suffolk, has been temporarily suspended, according to the Transportation Secretary.

VDOT is still securing environmental reviews, so contract work has been temporarily suspended to cut spending.

"The commonwealth remains committed to moving forward on Route 460 corridor improvements," said Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is still considering a permit decision. The project needs the permit because it would impact streams and wetlands.

The public will get to weigh in on the plans for the project at meetings held along the corridor. Their input will help shape the final draft that will go to the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

"We have to let that process unfold," said Layne. "In the meantime, no public dollars will be spent on the project other than what is necessary to complete the environmental review process."

A final decision is expected by the end of the year.
