Caught on Camera: Burglary suspect drinks, sleeps in Richmond bar

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Surveillance video captures a bold thief drinking, searching for cash, and even sleeping in a Shockoe Bottom bar.

The video shows the suspect making his entrance through a broken glass door.

"I was shocked," said Off the Hookah general manager Roland West. "It's uncommon. In three years we have never had anything like this."

The suspect seems to think he's hit the jackpot with a golden sphinx, but he soon realizes it is just costume decoration. Bar managers say the suspect then attempts to load more than $300 worth of alcohol into a garbage bag.

"The bag actually broke," said West. "And he proceeded to kind of just get drunk in here for a couple of hours."

The suspect eventually turns his attention to the cash register. He has no luck prying open the cash register and so decides to take a nap.

"He literally went over to the bed and took a nap," said West. "We found him in the morning."

Managers immediately called 911, but they say 45-year-old Larry Smith ran. Police captured Smith hours later.

"I'm impressed," said West. "I'm glad they got him. Trust me. You are not going to get away with it."
