Henrico FD honors soldier for helping firefighter injured in crash on 295

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

The Henrico Fire Department is honoring a soldier for his help after a crash involving a firefighter earlier this month.

As a Henrico firefighter for the last five years, Alex Grant is accustomed to coming to the rescue of those in need... but on the morning of March 3, after yet another winter storm, he found himself in need of help.

Grant hit a patch of ice while driving on 295 in Hanover. His vehicle flipped over three times.

"My thought was that someone would stop." said Grant.

The person who pulled over to help: Sgt. Johnathan Hoggatt. Both men were headed home in the rough weather from long shifts.

Sgt. Hoggatt says he always carries his medical aid bag and not helping a person in need is not an option.

"I'm just doing my job," said Hoggatt.

Tuesday morning, the Henrico Fire Department honored Hoggatt for springing into action and helping one of their own, even calling him a hero.

It's not a title he's comfortable with. He says anyone can - and should - come to the rescue of a person in need.

Grant has a few minor aches and pains as a result of the accident, but he also says he has a new friend.

"In the fire service, in the military, it's kind of a brotherhood-type atmosphere, so I definitely feel like we're part of that brotherhood together now." said Grant.
