PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg Police say no charges will be filed after they found a child wandering the streets Monday morning.
The 3-year-old boy, who eventually identified himself as "Darnell," was found wandering around 9:30 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Washington Street and Guarantee Street.
A city worker found the child alone and about to cross the street. The worker stopped the child, but he was unable to give any information except his name.
"He was siting on a porch and whenever police asked what his name was, he didn't have definitive answers," said Petersburg Police spokesperson Esther Hyatt.
Two hours later, police sent out Darnell's picture to the media, and 911 calls came flooding in with how to find his mom.
"This works well for us whenever we can partner with our media outlets," said Hyatt.
Darnell is back with his mother. The circumstances of how Darnell was all alone have not been released by police or by case workers at the Department of Social Services. Darnell's family is being evaluated, but police have come to the point where they feel comfortable enough sending him back home.
