Hanover official explains school closing: 'We got hit twice as hard'

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

Just about every major school system in the metro region has announced a two-hour delay for Wednesday. Hanover school leaders say their district was hit twice as hard by the recent snow storm, and students must stay home Wednesday.

We found most streets off Beaver Dam Road covered in snow and ice.

"Whoever is driving needs to stay focused," said Hunter Purcell who owns his own business and thought twice about venturing out for work. "I was just scared we were going to get hung up or mess the truck up."

The side streets were unbelievably slick in Hanover County, but there was a noticeable difference on the main roads. Purcell says the real challenge is getting home.

"You need to keep a rope or something with you in case you get hung up," said Purcell. "A good samaritan might pull you out."

Hanover County Assistant School Superintendent David Myers says the district is focused on the safety of students.

"We got hit probably twice as hard as Chesterfield County or Henrico County," said Myers. "As much as we want our kids to be in school everyday, there are just some days that we are not comfortable putting those buses on the road."

Myers notes faculty and staff are to report on a two hour delay Wednesday.
