Black History Month: Petersburg Library closed after protest 54 years ago

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

54 years ago, Petersburg's own Dr. Wyatt Walker was sitting in a jail cell.

He launched the first march on a public library in America - with the goal of having blacks and whites being able to read together.

African Americans were only allowed to use the basement of the Petersburg Public Library, but to this day, Dr. Walker remembers those dark and dank conditions.

Petersburg closed the library following Dr. Walker's historic protest. It remained closed from the end of February, until November. That's when a Richmond federal court ordered that it be open to everyone.
