RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones will accept the chairmanship of the Democratic Party of Virginia, according to sources.
The official announcement is expected to come Monday. Jones will replace current party chair Charniele Herring, who announced she is stepping down last month to run for the congressional seat left vacant by retiring Rep. Jim Moran.
Herring's resignation as party chair takes effect March 15 at which point sources say the Democrats will name Jones to the post, however Jones will still have to be officially voted in by members of the Virginia Democratic committee.
Jones takes over chairmanship of the party as it shows strength in the Commonwealth. Virginia's governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and both U.S. senators are Democrats. The party also controls state senate.
Insiders say Jones has considered a future run for statewide office for some time.
