As many of you know, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a bill that would have allowed businesses that asserted their religious beliefs the right to deny service to gay and lesbian customers.
I want to thank you Madam Governor for this wise decision. This decision will not only benefit the citizens of Arizona, but it will benefit the citizens of the world.
Discrimination anywhere is discrimination everywhere.
It is important for us all to remember that Senate Bill 1062 did not appear out of thin air, but legislators and citizens in the state of Arizona gave very careful thought to how this bill would affect the rights of some of its own citizens.
We must also keep in mind that legislative bills like this are in the minds and hearts of other state legislators around the country. It is important that you pay attention to what is going on behind the scenes.
I applaud businesses like Delta Airlines and the NFL for sending a strong message that passage of discriminatory bills like this will not receive commercial support.
It wasn't too long ago that religion was used as the excuse to not serve people of color and other ethnic groups in the state of Virginia. We must never allow anything like this to ever happen again.
