The routes for the UCI Road World Championships, being held in the Richmond Metro-Area in September of 2015, were finally released Tuesday.
What makes Richmond special will be on view for all the world to see come 2015. The iconic views, the James River, southern history and cobblestone streets all play a part in the road world championship routes.
"Every meeting I have been to, every presentation I have made, every party that I have been to I've had to answer questions about what are the courses," Richmond 2015 Chief Operating Officer Tim Miller said.
The Team Time Trial starts at Rockett's Landing, goes east along Route 5 on the river, hits the Richmond National Battlefield Park, then goes back into the city and ends at the convention center.
One course will be used in several races. It starts at the convention center. Cyclists will head west to Monument Avenue, turn around at the Jefferson Davis Monument and speed through VCU. They'll then head back and forth over the James River, climb up Governor Street and race to the finish line downtown.
The track getting the most reaction from the crowd Tuesday was the Road Circuit. It starts the same way but instead of going across the river, cyclists will bump down the cobblestone streets of Shockoe Slip and climb up both the twists of Libby Hill and a huge ascent on 23rd street. They'll then head back through downtown to the finish line.
The last course expands the view of the area. It starts at King's Dominion, then goes through Hanover and Henrico Counties and back into the city through Virginia Union University. Racers will then head back downtown to the convention center.
The finish line for all four of the courses revealed will be at Fifth and Broad Streets.
All of the locations and routes picked are part of a larger strategy.
"We have to keep in mind the areas that the city and the counties and the state want to show off to a worldwide audience," Miller added. "We also have to look at how local residents and businesses will be impacted during the event."
If you're not a cyclist but the event sounds great to you, there are opportunities to volunteer for it. More details on that should be available soon.
