Richmond police say three arrested have plagued the Museum District
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -
Numbers released by the Richmond Police Department show property crime is up in the Museum District, but officers hope those numbers will drop with three recent arrests.
Claude Jay Centanni is one of three suspected burglars accused of terrorizing the Museum District for months. He was arrested after he was caught rummaging through a truck that didn't belong to him.
On Tuesday morning, Graham Haddock was in his bakery when a co-worker ran in saying she saw someone rummaging through their neighbor's truck.
Haddock went after him.
"I told him that he needed to come with me, and he instantly threw his hands up and said, 'I didn't do anything, I didn't do anything' so I knew he was the guy," he said. "I just took him to the ground and then kept him on the ground until the police arrived."
Centanni was taken into custody. A look at his criminal history shows he has prior charges of car break-ins and petty larceny and Richmond Police believe Centanni could be responsible for dozens of car break ins in the Museum District alone.
Police hope with Centanni's arrest, property crimes will drop.
"The trend of home break-ins and thefts from motor vehicles is going go back down," says Captain Emmett Williams with the Richmond Police Department. "When you've had a trend where lots of vehicles have been broken into. It just so happens after you make that arrest, your trend stops."
According to stats released by Richmond police, property crimes are up by 38% compared to this time last year. Both car break-ins and home break-ins are up.
"We had two individuals who were causing us problems breaking into homes, we've arrested both those individuals." Captain Emmett Williams says, with those recent arrests crime should drop but they're not taking any chances.
"We're not going rest just because we've made some arrests," said Williams. "We put together a lot of initiatives, we put some overtime in there, we did some surveillance work with some undercover officers, and some high visibility officers."
Officers in the Museum District say they'll continue stepping up patrols to combat those stats as much as possible.
