Man charged with hurting baby daughter in court

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -
A Chesterfield dad was in court Tuesday for reportedly sending his 5-month-old daughter to the hospital. Police have charged Jonathan Jenkins with a number of charges, after they say he hurt her so badly she had life-threatening injuries.

Jenkins appeared in court via teleconference, and expressed concern about when he would talk to his attorney.

Jenkins is familiar with the court process. He's served time before in Henrico after being convicted of obstructing justice and breaking and entering. He's also faced more serious charges that lawyers dropped, for now. Meanwhile, his baby daughter is hurt and fighting for her life at the hospital.

Police say he didn't shake her but that she had visible injuries, likely from blunt force trauma. The baby's mother came home and found her, and tried to get help right away.

Police say she tried to dial 911 for help, but he prevented her from doing that, so she ran to get help from a neighbor.

Family members on both sides of the family were in court Tuesday, but they didn't want to talk about how the baby was doing. Police say child protective services also has an investigation underway.

Jenkins is due back in court in March for a preliminary hearing.
