CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A massive blaze at a Chesterfield home caused ammunition to explode Monday evening.
Firefighters rushed to the two-story home in the 7700 block of Jahnke Road around 8:30 p.m and found flames, some 10' high, shooting from the roof. Fire officials say it took around 45 minutes to get the flames under control, because the home is set far back off the road and there are no nearby neighbors.
Firefighters couldn't get inside or near the home because the fire caused ammunition inside the home to go off.
"It's one of those rare cases where people have guns, people have ammunition and when there's a fire, they decide to go off," said Chesterfield Battalion Chief Stuart Dalton.
The couple that lives there was not home at the time, and no injuries have been reported.
The house has been declared a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
