Shamrock the Block moves to Boulevard

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The 11th annual Shamrock the Block festival is moving away from Shockoe Bottom and over to a site on the Boulevard this year.

The event will be held March 15 at a site near Broad Street, according to the event's website. Organizers say there will be more kids activities, bands and things to do at the free outdoor event. They also say they will have more space and better parking than at the 17th Street Farmer's Market where it had been held.

Last year's event was marred by controversy after a YouTube video showed a brawl involving a Colonial Heights man and Richmond Police.

Video of the fight went viral, causing some to question whether police were too rough with Jason Dotson. Dotson was charged with drunk in public and later charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer, though the charges were reduced to obstruction of justice and later dismissed.

After the March incident, Richmond Police said they were conducting an internal investigation, which would include witness and officer interviews.
