CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A Chesterfield man is accused of injuring his 5-month-old daughter, then hitting the mother when she tried to call police from his Woodlake home.

Chesterfield Police arrested Jonathan M. Jenkins, 24, Sunday. Officers say he was with the baby at his home in the 6500 block of Woodlake Village Court Saturday when he injured his daughter. When the child's mother came home, she found her girl badly injured and tried to call 911. However, police say Jenkins tried to stop her and hit her. She eventually escaped with the child to a neighbor's house and called police.

The child was taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where she is still being held.

Jenkins is charged with malicious wounding, felony child neglect, domestic assault and preventing someone from calling 911. He is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail and will appear in Chesterfield County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Tuesday.
