Person assaulted near VCU, students speak out

Campus Crime Alerts, love them or hate them, they could potentially save the life of a student.

"They like always send us VCU alerts and there is always something going on over here like robbery and things like that," Binh Nguyen said.

VCU Freshman Binh Nguyen says she's thankful for those crime alerts. The recent sexual assault so close to campus has her and other students on edge.

Police say the incident happened at an off campus apartment Saturday, on West Broad Street. They also say the suspect and the victim knew each other.

While this appears to be an isolated incident Nguyen says, anytime she's downtown on the main campus she keeps a watchful eye.

"I don't come to this campus often but when I do I try to go over when the sunlight is still out so its you know safer that way," Nguyen said.

VCU police is reminding students to be alert and aware at all times. If you find yourself in a bad situation, call police.

They also suggest reporting suspicious people or situations and never isolate yourselves or travel alone during late hours.

"Stay with groups you don't want to be out too late by yourself."

Lee Wilson, a VCU junior was walking near Broad Street where the alleged sexual assault happened. Despite what he calls a fair share of crime in the area surrounding the main campus Wilson is not alarmed.

"I usually feel safe we get the crime alerts when they come about but its usually no big deal," Wilson said.

Still students like Binh Nguyen are on the lookout and encourage other students to do the same. Police are still investigating this crime.
