PA Turnpike reopens after massive pileup

Up to 100 cars piled up on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday after several multi-car crashes. Up to 100 cars piled up on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday after several multi-car crashes.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA (RNN) - The Pennsylvania Turnpike has reopened after at least 30 people sustained injuries in a collision involving dozens of vehicles and multiple tractor-trailers Friday.

Officials said about 100 cars and trucks were involved.

Emergency responders removed 30 drivers and passengers via ambulance, Turnpike spokesman Bill Capone told the Associated Press. He said he believed none of the injuries had been major.

A hospital spokeswoman told AP that none of the injuries were life-threatening for the 16 patients they received.

The vehicles got caught in massive pileups around 8 a.m. ET, causing a miles-long stretch of a main interstate artery to be closed.

"I started watching cars bounce off of the center divider.  Took a little bit for me to understand what was going on, and so, I started to slow down.  I hit my breaks, but 276 wasn't plowed very well and I came to a complete stop and I started watching cars pile up ahead of me," said driver Heather Pasco.

"I came to a complete stop and looked in my rear-view mirror and there was a big moyer truck, right behind me, and he was trying to stop, but he was sliding and he slammed right into the back of me and made me slam into the car right in front of me."

People could be seen getting carried over the median barrier to emergency vehicles on the other side.

Rescue workers had to pry someone out of a white sedan that suffered serious damage, the Inquirer reported. The trooper blamed drivers going too fast and too close to other vehicles in the snowy conditions.

The turnpike was reopened to traffic just before 4 p.m., about 7.5 hours after the first crash occurred.
