Snow causing delivery dilemmas for area florists

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

For area florists, this snow storm is causing a delivery dilemma. This is supposed to be their busiest time of year, but some businesses are actually stopping deliveries Wednesday.

It is the week of Valentine's Day and love is in the air. Only problem, so is the snow and that's causing major challenges for area florists."

Flowers, candy, and stuffed animals are part of what makes Valentine's Day but one guest is arriving uninvited.

"I've been here for 30 years and this is the first time it's happened right at Valentine's Day," said Chris Uyhelyi of Strange's Florist.

The snow is canceling all deliveries Thursday and Friday at Strange's.

Employees had to break the news to customers Wednesday.

"Some of them are upset because they really want it on that day but a lot of them were really understanding," Uyhelyi said.

It's not the position they wanted to be in. Strange's even hired extra drivers to accommodate the Valentine's Day rush.

"People that come and use their own vehicles to contract for us because we have a good 2,000 deliveries normally so we get about 80 people to just come work for the holiday and we can't ask them to be out in those conditions," she said.

But store managers say they don't want to just close the door altogether during their busiest time of the year so they'll be open all day Thursday and Friday. They say if it's safe enough for customers to get there, then they'll be able to accommodate.

They just have one fear.

"A lot of people aren't going to want to come out and brave the storm so I'm sure it will impact our sales," she said.

With so many extra floral arrangements ready to go, employees are hoping love will save the day.

"We have to get rid of all this," Uyhelyi said.

Some area florists actually are attempting deliveries Thursday but others are having to roll over deliveries until after Valentine's Day.
