Amazon says it is hiring nearly 1,000 in RVA

Amazon announced Wednesday, close to 1,000 jobs coming to the Chester-Petersburg area. An Amazon spokeswoman says the company is expanding its employee base because of more demand from customers.

The jobs are available right now. To learn more about working at an Amazon fulfillment center, visit

Officials say the jobs are full-time in picking, packing, and shipping orders. For people living in the region, it's welcome news.

"It matters a lot because jobs are really scarce right now so people really do need the jobs," said Renee Kephart. She's considering applying.

"I'm gonna tell my daughter, " said Richard Staublen. "I'm going to tell some of her friends, it'll be good for them."

For many, a tough economy has meant a tough time finding work.

Jody Ashworth has a friend already working for Amazon and believes this will be a big chance for nearly a thousand people.

"She says its hard work," said Ashworth. "No doubt about it, but its good work and its honest work. And that's the bottom line! You have to get people working again!"

You need a GED or High School diploma to apply.

"We're excited to be hiring nearly 1,000 new employees in the area into full-time jobs that offer comprehensive benefits, including our Career Choice program where we'll pre-pay employees tuition to go back to school. We have found top talent in abundance in the area and we're glad to be growing our operations in Virginia." - Kelly Cheeseman, Amazon Spokesperson
