Snow preparations underway, anticipation of power loss

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The possibility of heavy, wet snow could mean major power problems across Richmond. Dominion has crews coming in to help, trucks are packed, and crews have a plan to get to work.

One of the biggest concerns is the weight of the snow and ice on trees near power lines that could knock the power out. If that happens near you, do not try to fix the problem yourself. Instead, call Dominion or reach out to the company online.

"It will be challenging for our crews to get out and begin the work that they need to do while the storm is continuing," said Le-Ha Anderson, with Dominion Virginia Power. "We will have to navigate through the storm before we can get our crews out."

It's a good reason, say officials, for you to stay home if you can. If crews have to navigate around slipping or broken down cars, it could take longer to restore power.

Before the storm hits is a good time to get supplies in place - things like water, flashlights or batteries. Don't just have them, know where they are and put the batteries in the flashlight ahead of time so if the power does go out, you're ready.

"We encourage people to have a plan, so today is a great day to go through their emergency supply kit and make sure that they have non-perishable food and that they also have contact numbers written down for all of their loved ones," said Emily Dillon, with Chesterfield's Emergency Management team.

Consider charging your cell phone ahead of time so you have a means to call for help. If you have to drive your car, fill up your car with gas before the power goes out, and put emergency supplies in your car too.

Here's the number you'll need if your power goes out, so write it down or put it into your phone right now: 1-866-DOMHELP.
